Summer School Parents Information
|
- Summer school classes will run from Monday, June 6th, through Friday, July 15, 2011. Monday, July 4th, is a holiday.
- Since the pace of instruction in summer is much faster than that of the regular year, absences are to be avoided.
Students will be automatically dropped on their fourth absence, regardless of the reason. Students enrolled in a three-week,
five-credit course will be dropped on the third absence.
- CORE Program: These classes are all academic in nature. Priority for enrollment is given to students who have failed an
academic class, those behind in credit, or those needing extra help to enter college.
We are limited by law to offering this program to only 5% of the school's total enrollment. For this reason, space in a class is
competitive. Each school will establish its own system for determining the priority for who gets enrolled, but a given high school
may not enroll more than its allotted share. Places for pre-registered students will be held only until 8:00 a.m. on June 6, 2011.
After that, spaces will go to those present to register.
Students who are unsure as to whether or not they can attend for a full summer session should not register for this program since
they will be depriving some other student of a spot in class if they enroll and then drop.
- It is possible, in a four-hour class only, to attend for three weeks and receive five units of credit. The three weeks could be
for the first semester (June 6th to June 24th) or for the second semester (June 27th to July 15th). Space availability is a factor in
both cases.
- Student may not attend for half of the session in a two-hour class and receive credit.
- Since the summer school programs are voluntary in nature, students should understand that proper behavior; observance of the regular
discipline code, and regular attendance is expected. Students who have difficulty in adhering to the rules and regulations will be dropped
from classes.
- In the Kern High School District, a student may use a grade in a summer school class to improve the spring semester grade point average
if doing so will make him/her eligible for athletics or activities during fall semester. Summer school grades, for eligibility purposes only,
are hand figured into the preceding semester if the student requests it. Grades for all other students are figured into the succeeding semester.
You are urged to discuss this policy with your school site Athletic Director.
- Ten units is the normal maximum credit a student may earn during the summer.
