Welcome to KHSD Student Nutrition and Food Services Department:

Providing healthy, nutritious and economical meals for students is the mission of more than 270 student nutrition and food service employees. We are a partner in education serving more than 4.2 million meals during the 2010-2011 school year. Menus meet and exceed the nutritional standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture. Students who eat a school breakfast and lunch get more than 50 percent of their Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamins A, C, iron, calcium, protein and calories. School meals provide an opportunity for students to select low fat entrees, fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Student feedback plays an important role in planning what is served at school. Students are encouraged to join the Student Nutrition Advisory Council (SNAC) at their school site. SNAC members are the school's "nutrition ambassadors" and participate in recipe and product tests, provide feedback to improve cafeteria operations and participate in the school nutrition/health fairs. Learn more about SNAC here.

Keeping foods safe is important to all cafeteria staff. Each cafeteria has two or more employees who have completed the eight-hour certification course and passed a written test on their food safety knowledge. All school cafeterias are inspected twice a year by the Kern County Department of Environmental Health. Click here to see the inspection report for your student's school cafeteria.
