How To Get A Scholarship

HOW TO GET A SCHOLARSHIP
A GUIDE TO THE BHS CLASS OF 2008-2009
FROM THE DESK OF Mrs. Saenger

You must apply. The first of many forms is the BHS Scholarship Application form.

Submitting this form DOES NOT mean you will automatically get money/scholarships. There are more forms you need to file. You must apply for each one individually - pick up applications from my office.

THINGS YOU NEED TO DO NOW:

Prepare a resume of your activities. Attach resume to Scholarship Application and submit. Counselors and teachers refer to these to write letters of recommendation for you.

Prepare a Personal Statement. Almost all scholarship applications request a personal-statement to include your future plans and goals in education, career and life. Save it on computer and print out fresh copy as needed. Attach copy to Scholarship Application and submit to my office.

Letters of recommendation from your teachers: Ask them for permission to copy them and keep for future scholarship applications. Almost all scholarship applications request at least two letters of recommendation and the self-statement.

CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

Some are given on the basis of: Financial Need; some are based on merit - your GPA.

Ethnic Background or Gender: Examples: the Chinese Women’s Club to students of Chinese descent.

Field of Interest: Such as Engineering, Nursing, and Business. Examples: Long’s Drugs Scholarship to Business Majors but they give preference to Pharmacy Majors; San Joaquin Hospital to nursing majors.

Essay - These are open to everyone.

You need to apply.

SOME SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED AT BHS:

Many local organizations/companies offer scholarships to our students such as: Coca Cola, CalResources, Wal-Mart, etc. Check the Scholarship list on the BHS web page under Scholarships.

PTSA and Booster Club are BHS organizations but you must be a member.

BHS Clubs on campus such as Key Club, Valkyries, etc. and again only for members.

Some are targeted specifically for children of their employees or members such as: Kern County Fire Department, California Teachers Assn., etc.

CHECK WITH YOUR PARENTS – FIND OUT WHICH ORGANIZATIONS THEY BELONG TO THAT OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS. REQUEST APPLICATIONS AND APPLY.

MEMORIALS: Students don’t apply for any of these. Teachers nominate students & the BHS Scholarship Application you submit to my office will be sent to the donors and they will select the recipient.

OBTAINING INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS:

Find the posted Scholarship List and read it. Complete list of scholarships available along with deadlines is posted outside my office and the BHS website. Copies are periodically sent to Senior English, Government & Economics teachers.

CONCLUSION (A FEW TIPS)

Read the Scholarship List page or check the web site frequently to see what applications are currently in my office. My announcements will not be read over the loud speaker because they are too long BUT they are posted in a binder on the counter in the Career Center.  Stop by
any time and take a look.

Submit your scholarship application, personal statement, and resume to my office. I will accept late applications.

Apply for as many scholarships as possible!

IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE, PLEASE STOP BY MY OFFICE ANYTIME. AFTER SCHOOL SEEMS TO BE THE BEST TIME.
