| The Organization - A Key Piece of the Puzzle |
Opportunities for Kern High School District (KHSD) students to discover are as numerous as the pieces of a puzzle that reveals an
inspiring picture of student success in a variety of endeavors. That picture would not be complete without a key piece of the puzzle,
the KHSD Educational Foundation.
State funding for public school districts, even in the best of times, provides primarily for basic educational needs such as teachers
and classrooms. State funding does not provide for many of the resources that may be required for students to succeed at their highest
levels.
The KHSD cannot use any state funding to provide any student scholarships. The state does not provide funding for students to travel to
state and national competitions. The state does not provide all of the funding for football stadium scoreboards, lighting or the sound
systems. Yet, KHSD students enjoy all of the above and many other opportunities because of strong community support available through
the KHSD Educational Foundation.
The Foundation was created in 1989 to gather and guide community support for KHSD students and programs. To date, the Foundation has
raised more than $3.5 million to help fulfill the dreams and aspirations of thousands of students.
Through the Foundation, millions of dollars in scholarships have been awarded in cooperation with organizations such as the Kern Agricultural
Foundation, Project BEST, the Superintendent’s First In Class Awards and other programs.
Through the Foundation, KHSD academic teams such as Academic Decathlon, FFA, and “We, the People…” have brought distinction to Kern in a
wide range of state and national competitions. The Bakersfield High Virtual Enterprise team, which last year placed first in the nation in
New York City, made the trip with help from the Foundation.
Other KHSD programs to benefit from the Foundation include Principal Partners’ Day, Physics Olympics, and a range of athletic, fine arts,
career & technical education and academic programs.
