Superintendent’s Comment on First In Class Awards

It is my privilege, as Superintendent of the Kern High School District, to recognize those students who have achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in their school’s graduating class.

This accomplishment is one of the most remarkable feats in all of education. The competition for this award is extremely intense and demands excellence throughout a four year gauntlet of increasingly rigorous mental, physical and emotional challenges.

Thousands begin this competition as freshmen. The few who prevail have demonstrated rarified character and a fierce commitment to excellence.

Those who have prevailed in this most difficult of competitions are the ultimate keepers of the flame that lights the Kern High School District’s Tradition of Excellence. To them, I extend my sincere congratulations.

Sincerely,
Donald E. Carter
Superintendent
Kern High School District

The Superintendent's First In Class Awards

The Kern High School District Superintendent’s First In Class Awards Scholarship Program was incorporated into the KHSD’s Educational Foundation beginning with the Class of 2006.

The First In Class Awards were conceived in order to better recognize what KHSD Superintendent Dr. Don Carter characterizes as "one of the most remarkable feats in all of education."

First In Class Awards are presented to those students who achieve the highest grade point average in their school’s graduating class. In the event of a tie for the highest grade point average, more than one Superintendent’s First In Class Award is presented.

Typically, First In Class Award recipients have earned an A in every class in high school while taking the maximum possible number (16 semesters) of Advanced Placement (AP), Honors or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes.

The KHSD Superintendent’s First In Class Awards are presented after graduation in the latter half of June with a program held at the District Office that includes a reception and a formal awards ceremony. The program includes presentation of a First In Class plaque to the student, a First In Class Award plaque to the parents, and scholarship documentation.

Scholarship amounts vary annually according to the number of First In Class Award recipients and donations to the KHSD Educational Foundation’s Superintendent’s First In Class Award Scholarship fund. Donations to the fund are dedicated for scholarship purposes only and not the cost of the awards, the plaques or any other aspect of the First In Class Awards Program.
