KHSD Special Ed Students, Staff to Celebrate Halloween with a Blast
More than 1,000 local Special Education students, staff and volunteers are expected to participate in the Kern High School District’s (KHSD) annual Special Education Halloween Blast to be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the East Bakersfield High School’s New Gym.
In costume for the festivities will be students, staff members and volunteers from two KHSD Special Education programs, the ABLE Center and the AIM/ACE Center, as well as from Special Day Classes at 16 high schools in the District. The more than 60 classes all together consist of students with developmental delays and behavioral disorders.
Event festivities will include dancing and a DJ, carnival games, costume contests, decorations, and food, said East Bakersfield High Teacher, Henri Blanc. “This event has become one of the most anticipated events of the school year for all of our Special Education students and staff,” Blanc said.
This year’s event will be the biggest and best ever, said Blanc noting about 100 students participated the first year the event was held. The event has grown steadily with support from donors that include Klassen Corporation, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, ACE Hydraulic, Karen Gaul, Attorney at Law, the Culligan Corporation, Shirley Miles of Miles Home Care, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market (5190 Stockdale Highway) and Andy Gump Temporary Site Services. “Without the community’s involvement, we would not be able to host this event,” Blanc said. “Our staff and students are very appreciative of their help.”
The event is hosted by East High’s Mobility Class. Major support in putting on the event comes from the ABLE Center and East High’s Peace, Love, and Happiness Club, as well as from three other student organizations at East High – AVID, Black Student Union, and the MEChA Club.
