Student videographers to test film making skills over 18 hours
”Your team has 18 hours to make a better film than any of the more than 35 other teams in the competition.”
The second annual Kern High School District “18 Hour Film Project” (18HFP) begins on Friday at East Bakersfield High School starting at 5 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.
Videographer teams from Arvin, West, Frontier, Ridgeview, Centennial, Highland and East Bakersfield high schools will have exactly 18 hours to write, shoot and edit a 3 to 5 minute film, said Al Gaines, an event organizer. More teams may enter the competition before the Wednesday noon deadline.
“This is a fun and exciting contest for students who must think fast, be creative on a tiny budget and put together in only 18 hours the best film possible using all the video production skills they have learned,” said Gaines, a Multi Media teacher at East Bakersfield High.
Starting at 5 p.m. Friday, teams will be assigned a random character, a famous line from a movie, a “silly” prop and a film genre, Gaines explained. “After writing the film Friday evening, teams will shoot Saturday morning and edit Saturday afternoon,” Gaines said. Final products will be presented starting at 7 p.m. Saturday in East High’s auditorium. The public is invited to view the presentation of the final products. Admission is free.
The competition has grown from last year’s inaugural competition when 20 teams competed, Gaines noted. Last year, the first place team took home a $700 cash prize, about half of the total cash prizes awarded, said Gaines.
The 18HFP competition is sponsored this year by PLCs Plus International, Inc. More sponsors are being sought. “One advantage to being a sponsor is the sponsoring business can be included in the films produced by competing teams,” said Gaines.
