KHSD’s Principal Partners’ Day offers look at 21st Century High School
The Kern High School District’s 2011 Principal Partners’ Day will be held on Tuesday, October 11.
The District’s annual “open house” is a half day event that begins with visits that start at 7:45 a.m. at any one of 20 various District school sites. The District tries to honor participant requests to visit a particular school but such requests cannot always be honored. The event ends with an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Doubletree Hotel that concludes at 1 p.m.
“Our Principal Partners’ Day program is a perfect opportunity to get a firsthand look at how our students are being equipped with the Skills for 21st Century Success,” said KHSD Superintendent Dr. Don Carter, underscoring the theme for this year’s event.
The majority of Principal Partners’ Day is spent at a school site visiting with teachers, students and school officials. Site visits provide an in depth look at the full range of school site programs and services, both academic and extracurricular. The visits are expected to conclude about 11 a.m. followed by the luncheon program at the Doubletree Hotel.
The featured speaker this year is Centennial High social studies teacher Ryan Coleman. Centennial High’s “We, the People, and the Constitution” team, coached by Coleman, finished second in the state competition last year. Coleman chair’s the school’s social studies department. Most recently, Coleman was named a Stanford University Teacher Tribute Honoree.
The 2011 Principal Partners’ Day will conclude with the presentation of the KHSD’s Jim Burke “Light and Liberty” Award for service to Kern County education. Previous winners include Bakersfield businessman Ben Stinson (2010), The Harry and Ethel West Foundation (2009), businessman Carl Leech, owner of Mr. Tuxedo (2007), Dr. Carlos Alvarez, a local physician (2006), Shannon Smith (Grove), then owner of Continental Labor Resources (2005), Bakersfield businessman Rolly Rhodes (2004), and Dave Spalinger, owner of Skyline Cabinets (2003). The District did not host a Principal Partners’ Day in 2008 due to budget restrictions resulting from the state’s financial crisis.
Principal Partners’ Day is co-hosted by the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the KHSD, and the KHSD Educational Foundation. For additional information, contact Graci Ashmore in the KHSD Superintendent’s Office, 827-3154.
