KHSD charter school to honor graduates on Thursday

Workforce 2000, a charter school associated with the Kern High School District, will hold its winter graduation ceremony on Thursday, December 22nd in the East Bakersfield High auditorium starting at 5:30 p.m.

Diplomas will be awarded to more than 50 students, according to Fucshia Ward, the KHSD Principal for Alternative Education programs. As such, Ward oversees Workforce 2000 as well as the District’s Independent Study Program and its six continuation high schools.

"More and more dropouts are realizing that high school is a time for developing skills and earning an education,” said Ward. “Students are realizing that having a diploma provides choices with which to achieve their ambitions through a vocational program, college, or the workplace.”

Workforce 2000 is designed to recover, serve and graduate high school aged students who have dropped out of school. Workforce 2000 students include those who have dropped out because of pregnancy, economic hardship, or other reasons.

Workforce 2000 students attend school in the evening so they can work during the day. Classes offered are the same as those provided students during the day. Through Workforce 2000, students can earn the 220 units required by the District for graduation.

Currently, more than 400 students are enrolled in a Workforce 2000 at six KHSD high school locations, Ward said.
