"The mission of the Kern High School District Police Department is to protect life and property, maintain a peaceful environment and promote a safe place for students to learn and successfully achieve their goals."

KERN HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT DEDICATED TO SAFE SCHOOLS
School safety cannot be separated from student achievement. Studies show that when students can focus their energies on learning rather than safety, achievement is higher. Safe schools are successful schools. That is why the Kern High School District Board of Trustees continues to make maintaining safe and secure schools a top priority. With aggressive policies and a zero-tolerance for drugs and weapons, the Board has set high expectations for student behavior. And, the Kern High School District Police Department is just one tool used to be sure that nothing interferes with the education of your children.

POLICE WITH A PURPOSE
Since its formation in 1975, the Kern High School District Police Department has been working to maintain schools that are safe havens for students. The department is dedicated to protecting students, staff members and district property. The officers have developed close working relationships with students, staff members, the communities in which they patrol and local law enforcement agencies to help maintain peaceful schools where students can learn and grow.

SCHOOL SAFETY TEAM
The School Police Officers are part of a network of professionals who are trained to help students deal with the pressures of being a teenager. Each comprehensive high school has a security team that includes a Dean of Students, a Police Officer and Campus Security Personnel to enforce the district's discipline code. They work with highly trained professionals on each campus which include, Counselors, Teachers, Community Counselors, Probation Officers, School Administrators and other school personnel to help students succeed.

PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION
The Kern High School Police Department is successful not just because it is aggressive about enforcement, but because of a strong belief in providing students with alternatives and assistance. Programs like DARE, Friday Night Live, counseling and mentoring offer students alternative activities. Athletic teams, band, speech, student academies, clubs and a myriad of other co-and extra-curricular programs keep students involved in positive, organized events that enrich their character. Students in need of assistance receive help from Counselors, Community Counselors, Probation Officers and other staff. Prevention and Intervention are key components to keeping schools safe.

SCHOOL SAFETY INVOLVES All OF US
It is a simple fact that a school system cannot maintain safe campuses without the involvement of parents, family and the community. The problems that confront our schools are merely a reflection of society as a whole. We are all responsible for developing solutions and helping our youth stay on the right track. In a recent survey of students, staff and teachers, all groups indicated they feel safe on campus. Keeping the areas safe that surround schools is achieved through partnerships with businesses, law enforcement and concerned community members. It takes everyone on campus and off to be certain students have a safe learning environment. The Kern High School District Police Department and its Officers are dedicated to the students, staff and the community they serve. Join us in this endeavor to insure school safety!
