The Chief Justice of California will be in Bakersfield on Friday May 17 for an awards ceremony to be held at Golden Valley High School starting at 9 a.m. in the school's cafeteria. Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, the 28th Chief Justice of California, will be at Golden Valley High for one hour only during which she will present the school with a Civic Learning Award of Excellence. During World War II, Army Private First Class Norval A. Monroe was killed in action on August 27, 1944 in France. Almost 70 years later, Monroe's surviving family will be reunited with his Purple Heart Medal during a ceremony to be held on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Kern Veteran's Memorial Wall of Valor at Truxtun and S Streets. KHSD Special Education program awarded $2,500 grant by PG&E.
Students in SCC's Able to Conserve Energy (ACE) class were awarded a $2,500 PG&E Solar Schools grant. A PG&E official presented the ACE students their $2,500 check today at the school. The grant funds will be used to build solar powered sheds and plant a school garden with vegetables and flowers on the SCC campus located adjacent to the KHSD's Golden Valley High School, said club advisor and SCC teacher Tim Horton. East High AVID program to be awarded prestigious designation.

Liberty High School has been named by the California Department of Education as a California Distinguished School for 2013. Liberty High is one of 218 California Middle and High schools to be honored as Distinguished Schools this year, said Tom Torlakson, the State's Superintendent of Public Instruction. An estimated 1,000 Kern High School District (KHSD) students will test their science skills at the District's 24th annual Physics Olympics to be held at Bakersfield College (BC) on Friday, April 27 starting at 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Foothill High's Astronomy Day offers stargazing, glimpse of the invisible.
Some of the greatest stars in the universe will be appearing at the fifth annual Kern County Astronomy Day to be held at Foothill High School on April 14th. Foothill High is located at 501 Park Dr. in northeast Bakersfield. Astronomy Day activities such as making your own planet globe, observing the sun safely and "A Walk Through the Solar System" begin at 2 p.m. in the Foothill High gymnasium. After a dinner break, a "door prize" drawing will begin at 7:15 pm. Prizes will include books, toys, globes, binoculars, and four telescopes. Student videographers to test film making skills over 18 hours
The second annual Kern High School District "18 Hour Film Project" (18HFP) begins on Friday at East Bakersfield High School starting at 5 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Videographer teams from Arvin, West, Frontier, Ridgeview, Centennial, Highland and East Bakersfield high schools will have exactly 18 hours to write, shoot and edit a 3 to 5 minute film, said Al Gaines, an event organizer.
